Beekeeping in the End Times is a multimedia project. The book and the film follow the many years of ethnographic research on climate change effects on honeybees, their partner plants, and human caregivers. The research findings are sobering. Even heartbreaking: across diverse, rewilding ecologies&nbsp; of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the strange new weather is disrupting honey flow, so much so that honeybees would be starving without human aid.
The climate catastrophe is making many of us worried that Earth is collapsing. But devout Bosnian Muslim beekeepers and bee lovers take it for granted that the world will end one day. God knows when. The &nbsp;Islamic end- times lore they keep retelling is not too eager to preview the Apocalyptic event. Rather it fixes attention to the here and now, when chances are wide open to keep deferring the bad end. Not least through beekeeping.&nbsp;

Beekeeping in the End Times explores the effects of the strange new weather on local honeybee ecologies. &nbsp;
Local beekeepers&nbsp; keep close records on the weather trends and the quality of &nbsp;the seasons. Attuned to their insects’ appetites they have a good grasp on the subtle effects of climate change whose implications are profound. And easily missed by lay observers.

Bees across Bosnia and Herzegovina forage in nearly ideal conditions. And yet, it is becoming increasingly difficult to keep the honeybees healthy and alive. Ferid, a veteran beekeeper, complains:“Things we used to know—weather, calendar, and climate--have shifted.” As a consequence, this versatile beekeeper and&nbsp; author of a dozen apicultural manuals, concludes: “The life of the bees and the beekeeper’s know-how are now coming apart.”

Beekeeping in the End Times is a story of this coming-apart of human knowledge, the bees, the plants, and the elements. Honey’s vanishing, the beekeepers say.

For the local Muslims, this is a cause for geat concern because&nbsp; honey is not only a vital food for the bees and a cherished medicine for humans. It is also&nbsp; the fruit of divine revelation bestowed upon the bee. The vanishing of honey is a sign of &nbsp;the waning world.&nbsp;

SYNOPSIS

Honey’s been vanishing, beekeepers in Bosnia and Herzegovina complain. Two sisters travel across the country to find out why.&nbsp;Tracking the old honey routes from their mountaintop apiary&nbsp;through wilderness and wastelands of Bosnia, the sisters&nbsp;gather traces of climate change and Muslim stories&nbsp;about the signs of the times.

You can watch the FULL FILM here:ABOUT &nbsp;THE &nbsp;FILM
Beekeeping in the End Times is an indie documentary by Larisa Jasarevic and Azra Jasarevic, the co-directors, sisters, and beekeepers. It brings together ethnographic research and filmmaking to tell upbeat stories about multispecies love and human responsibility in the face of the&nbsp; world going to wrack and ruin.&nbsp; The co-directors are grateful to the Wenner-Gren Fejos Fellowship for an ethnographic filmmaking, the ACLS/Luce Program for Religion, Journalism, &amp; International Affairs, and the Independent Social Resarch Foundation for making the production possible with their generous grants. &nbsp;The filming took a little more than a year while the post-production took twice as long while Larisa and Azra sorted through&nbsp; 72 hours of footage collected across 32 site in the mountainous, riverine, and Mediterranean ecologies&nbsp; of Bosnia and Herzegovina.&nbsp; Mirza Redzepagic, a gifted Bosnian musician, wrote an original score blending maqam music, Sufi invocations, Balkan lore, and industrial beats to build the mood of honey-hunting in the final times.

Research seminar with Larisa Jašarević: “The World after: Robobees and plant futures”

Abstract:
In sci-tech labs world over, the race is on to develop robotic pollinators. Autonomous vehicles and drones, guided by AI frameworks and fitted with precision pollination features, the artificial species of robotic pollinators are hailed as solutions to the planet’s ecological and climate challenges. The latest addition to the prolific speculations about the world after bees, robobees are attracting massive funds, public interest, and criticism of pollination ecologists. This talk darts back and forth between some biotic and robotic plant-insect-human relations to ponder cosmologies and eschatologies—ideas of the world and “the world after”—at work in divergent responses to the world in trouble.

AbstractThis essay gleans insights from local ecological practices and Islamic sources to address global climate futures. It outlines an eco-eschatology, as a disposition and practice of living towards the possibility of the end of the world. Key themes of eco-eschatology – attentiveness to the multispecies world, contemplation of human responsibility, hopefulness against the odds, and commitment to activism – are resonant with current eco-concerns. What eco-eschatology recommends, however, are due considerations of human contingency and divine agency in the climate disaster that makes us all muslim: subjects rather than sovereigns, at the mercy of what is, at the same time, beyond us and intimately involved with us.https://brill.com/view/journals/jome/13/3/article-p322_5.xml

Every hundred years, as the story goes, two angels wonder out loud whether the bees are still swarming. For as long as the bees are swarming, the angels are reassured, the world holds together. Still, the tale suggests, the angels live in anxious anticipation of the End. Local beekeepers in Bosnia and Herzegovina retell the old tale with growing unease, as their honeybees weather the ground effects of climate change.

Honey can flow in landscapes with dismal histories. But what futures are forecast in the honey’s waning from the wilds?TRT World Opinion, 7. April, 2022.

The keynote and the accompanying video set the tone for the workshop “Organizing for apocalypse,” convened jointly by ephemera, an independent, open access journal run by a devoted editorial collective and AlterEcos, a research group at the Copenhagen Business School. Starting from the premise that an apocalypse is more conceivable than ever the workshop asked might we prepare for an apocalypse and what to make of the many ongoing efforts to anticipate, counter, broadcast, or downplay apocalyptic organizing. In response, the keynote spoke of a heartbreak,as a devastating, intimate experience that Sufis highly recommend and practically cultivate in their contemplations of death and the world’s looming End. Heartbreaking is also everyday experience of local beekeepers in the face of the recurrent, disheartening finding that honey’s waning from the wilds. In fact, our species capacity for a heartbreak may be most effectively stalling the world’s bad end, the keynote proposed. The video compiles footage from the film, Beekeeping in the End Times, currently in production.

A family of would-be migrants reenacts a swarm hunt at their former apiary in northeastern Bosnia. Their folk spells were well-attuned to the sorts of crises that tatter old human-apian ties, except the latest: extreme weather and emigration. Meanwhile, one tepid February, shepherds reflect on gratitude as their sheep graze by the growing coal-power plant. “The End is not yet,” they say. These are snapshots of what Jasarevic calls the quiets of disaster. Sharing a rough cut of a story from an ethnographic film, Jasarevic’s presentation concerns disaster ecology, Islamic eschatology, and ethnography as a homesteading craft.

How to live on a battered planet?
Caring for bees, beavers, bats or brambles is not a humble starting point. It is the hands on chance to work against apocalypse while also pondering the meaning of the world that brings the marvellous multitude together and also brings misery and ruin.

	Larisa is a flawed human. Also, an anthropologist, an independent scholar, and a beekeeper. Her latest book, Beekeeping in the End Times (2024) and the documentary film by the same title, narrate Islamic eco-eschatology, honeybees, and climate change. Lately, Larisa’s been researching&nbsp; robobees and ecologies of inspiration.&nbsp; With her best friends, she’s&nbsp; writing Children of Salik : a children’s series of climate fiction books. She loved teaching at the University of Chicago and enjoyed &nbsp;a spell at&nbsp; the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science in Berlin.

Zumra, a retired economist, life-long writer, is turning her green fingers to our uncombed land, every day.&nbsp; Also,&nbsp; a bee-lover, she’s helping us catch every swarm. Practically-minded , she logs all our expenses. According to her count, the cost of our beekeeping to date is extravagant. Oh, but the joy of it, no one can account. No one but al Muhsi.

	Postcards from our village and apiary

These days, we keep bees, grow food, and otherwise film, write, and work on a mountaintop in northeastern Bosnia. It’s a steep patch of densely planted land. Our baba passed it on to us along with a small forest by a creek.&nbsp; He also left us a heap of&nbsp; dreams and wild plans for the land , yet to be pursued. &nbsp;Our mama, thankfully, keeps us down-to-earth, for homesteading at the current scale is already a lot of work. She is to our land what a queen bee is to a hive.

The many honeybees that live on our land&nbsp;occupy&nbsp;seventeen hives (among them is a wicker skep!). Our apiary is truly small but our greatest feat is that we’ve been managing to keep the bees alive and healthy over the years. We have harvested honey only three times, since 2015. Gorgeous, umber-colored linden, mixed in with black locust and blackberry blossoms, the honey is so fragrant that a whiff alone gives you a buzz. The jars warm up with golden hues as the honey crystalizes. All other years, we have fed honey and pollen (bought from a trusted source) back to the bees.

As the signs of global climate change become more immediately felt on the ground--even ground such as ours, far from industrial pollution and industrial agriculture, lovingly cultivated with bee-friendly flora and surrounded by forests and wilds--it is not clear how much longer we will be able to keep bees. In the meantime, with their perseverance, their beauty, their buzzing that sounds like invocation to Sufis and, anyhow, feels like a blessing, their swarming, nectar gathering, pollen foraging, pollinating and other acts of faith under inclement skies, the bees are keeping us going. <img width="5184" height="3456" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/69279812d1cbbfed36315f88f4a841fa0e8a8b48e35df4631a4c3bb69f0f739f/IMG_6840.JPG" style="width: 644.06185px; height: 429.374567px;">

	&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;

“Pčelarenje pred Kijamet” je multimedijalni projekat. Knjiga i istoimeni film proizašli su iz dugogodišnje, etnografske studije o negativnim posljedicama globalnih klimatskih promjena na medonosne pčele kao i na biljke koje su pčelama vrlo bliske: naime, cvjetnice bogate nektarom i polenom. Projekat se također zanima efektima klimatskih promjena na pčelare, koji su zaljubljenici u pčele i smatraju se njihovim čuvarima. U današnje vrijeme medonosne pčele teško da mogu preživjeti bez ljudske pomoći. Upravo su klimatske katastrofe većinu nas potakle na eshatološka razmišljanja—o smrti i o smaku svijeta. Prognoziramo i strepimo od scenarija apokaliptične budućnosti a nadamo se ne požuriti Kijamet. “Pčelarenje pred Kijamet” je priča o dubokoj povezanosti pčela i svijeta, dok kovitlaju predznaci Kraja. Nalazeći inspiraciju u Bošnjačkim pričama i u islamskim predajama o Kijametu i Ahiri Zemanu, ovaj projekat isprepliće ekološke i eshatološke spoznaje, stavljajući u fokus medonosne pčele. Jer vjera u život vrijedan življenja, u mednu budućnost, podrazumijeva eko-eskatološku svjesnost.&nbsp;
